Ariel Bustamante starts as a new Artist-in-Residence

21.01.2014

Bustamante`s works bring out other forms of listening.

Chilean artist Ariel Bustamante is known for works that break down traditional notions of sound art. In his projects and research, Bustamante concentrates on finding strategies to understand physical and cognitive aspects of sound. In this way both architectural and sculptural features are present in his art. Most projects also include elements of media technology and science.

Mostly self-taught, Bustamante began his career as a musician and producer of different styles of electronica. At the age of 23, he began to suffer the first symptoms of a rare medical condition of the inner ear that produces an enhanced auditory sensitivity via bone conduction. This could be what led him to divert his attention towards other forms of listening and eventually to the exploration of other lines of work.

In 2012, Ariel Bustamante was selected by Sound Development City to produce different sonic experiences in Berlin, London and Zurich, together with ten other artists and collaborators including Sam Auinger and Toby Heys. He recently collaborated with architect Alfredo Thiermann in the development of a large sonic sculpture that was placed in the main entrance of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Santiago, Chile.

Bustamante has written essays for the European Hz-Journal Magazine, and has exhibited his work at the ZKM Center for Art and Media Museum in Karlsruhe; Harvestworks, New York; 798 District, Beijing; and the Transitio Electronic Arts Festival in Mexico, among others.

Ariel Bustamante was chosen from a field of 94 applicants in an international open call and his residency will be from 2014 until 2015.

Aalto University`s Artist-in-Residence programme at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture is directed to multidisciplinary artists. During this time, the artist will produce a high-quality creative project combining various fields of art, research and technology. At the same time, the artist is expected to develop the artistic activities of the Aalto University.
