08.01.2013 The Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture held its anniversary gala on 7 January. The programme began with the exquisite opening lectures of the school’s 13 new professors and continued with speeches and other festivities.

School of Arts, Design and Architecture Formal Conferment Ceremony celebrated master’s and doctoral degree recipients

16.01.2013 The School of Arts, Design and Architecture held its fourth Formal Conferment Ceremony for recipients of master’s and doctoral degrees in art and design on 11 January 2013. The conferred masters, doctors and honorary doctors were accepted as members of the academic community. In addition to the honorary doctorates, 26 Doctor of Arts and 23 Master of Arts degrees were awarded.

Academy of Finland funding for Handling Mind research project

12.02.2013 A multidisciplinary research consortium led by Maarit Mäkelä, Professor at the Department of Design of the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, and Pirita Seitamaa-Hakkarainen, Professor of Craft Studies at the University of Helsinki, has received a grant of nearly EUR 1 million for their Handling Mind research project. The grant has been awarded from the Academy of Finland’s Research Programme on the Human Mind.

Hyères Fashion Festival finalist from the School of Arts, Design and Architecture

07.03.2013 Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture Master of Arts graduate Satu Maaranen has been selected from among 355 entrants to be one of the ten finalists in the Hyères Fashion Festival. The 28th International Festival of Fashion & Photography Hyères 2013 will be held between 26 and 29 April 2013 at the Villa Noailles in France.

Jussi Lehtomäki wins best student price with film Out into the woods at Tampere Film Festival

11.03.2013 Jussi Lehtomäki won the best student price with his documentary film Aamulla viemme lapset metsään (Out into the Woods) (ELO, 2012) at the Tampere Film Festival which was held on 6 - 10 March 2013 in Tampere, Finland. Out into the Woods takes the audience into the middle of a storytelling moment, and sends the viewer on a journey into the dark woods.

On Display application makes it to the innovation contest final

13.03.2013 Art display application On Display has been selected to the final round in the Uutisraivaaja innovation contest run by the Helsingin Sanomat foundation. The other finalists are Long Play, a platform for long-form feature journalism, Nearhood, a hyper local information service, Infogram, tool for combining video and infographics and PalloPostia, a news service for children. The contest drew 105 applications from Finland and abroad.

Helsinki as World Design Capital 2012 grew larger than planned

26.03.2013 The World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 year grew larger than originally planned, states International Design Foundation, the managing body of WDC Helsinki 2012, in its final report. The design year exceeded expectations on media coverage both in Finland and internationally.

Finland’s Aalto University’s show at the Milan Furniture Fair

03.04.2013 Norther - Design from Aalto University Student work from the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Finland will be on display at the Milan Furniture Fair from 9 to 14 April 2013. The name of the exhibition, Norther, refers to a sudden and stabbing north wind - it brings with it fresh design and fashion ideas from young northern designers of the future.

16.04.2013 Aalto University's data centre in Otaniemi will be shut down. The data centre infrastructure will be transferred to a new facility located in Otaniemi that the university has leased from an outside company. The procedure will increase the university's data centre capacity to meet the current needs and improve service reliability.

Over 15 000 applicants to Aalto University

17.04.2013 A total of 15 014 people applied to Aalto University through the joint application system for Finnish universities. More than 11 500 applications were for bachelor’s degree programmes, and for 10 583 applicants Aalto University was their first choice. Approximately 3 500 applications for master's degree programmes were submitted. In 2012, there were approximately 16 000 applicants.

Satu Maaranen wins first prize at Hyères Fashion Festival competition

29.04.2013 Master of Arts Satu Maaranen, who graduated from the Department of Design of the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, in Finland, has won the Grand Prix at the Hyères Fashion Festival with her collection for women. The prize is worth EUR 15 000. The inspiration for Maaranen's Garment in Landscape collection was landscape and its artistic interpretation. In addition, the prize includes EUR 3 000 from the Ra concept store and a collection to be produced in cooperation with Petit Bateau. The top fashion houses are interested in Maaranen and her collection.

Masters of Aalto is open – see the future of art, business and technology

08.05.2013 Aalto University's Masters of Aalto event (MoA) opens on Wednesday, 8 May in Helsinki's Sörnäinen neighbourhood in Finland. The memorable collection, which is open until 26 May, has more than 70 Master’s theses and works of graduates from all of the fields at Aalto University.

Website renewal at School of Arts, Design and Architecture kicks off with a competition for students and alumni

This is a competition aimed specifically at identifying a new concept rather than a ready-made website. The goal is to continue developing the winning competition proposal with its creator new autumn.

Graduation Ceremony attracted a large audience at Sampo Hall

24.05.2013 Recent graduates received certificates of their Master and Bachelor of Arts (Art and Design), Bachelor of Science (Technology) and Master of Science (Architecture) degrees at the spring Graduation Ceremony of the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Reorganisation of School of Arts, Design and Architecture activity in Pori

26.09.2013 Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture is in discussions on possible reorganisation of its functions in the University Consortium of Pori. As a result of the Aalto University degree reform, the Master’s Degree Programmes in Visual Culture and Creative Business Management (CBM), which have a combined total of 78 students, will be suspended in their current forms in autumn 2014.

Students' Pattern Lab'14 collection tests its wings on the world stage

22.10.2013 Master's degree students at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture are taking their recently completed Pattern Lab'14 collection out into the world. The sales of the collection to companies in Finland and Sweden begin in October. In February 2014, a group of students will go to the Première Vision show in Paris to exhibit and sell their collection to international companies.
