The admission results for Master’s level programmes released

27.05.2011 The admission results for Master’s level programmes at the School of Art and Design have been released. A total of 198 new students were accepted.

27.05.2011 At the graduation ceremony of the Aalto University School of Art and Design, students were honoured for outstanding achievements and student association Tokyo ry announced Teacher of the Year.

Professor appointments at the School of Art and Design

27.05.2011 Sampsa Hyysalo is the first tenure track professor of the Aalto University School of Art and Design. Alastair Fuad-Luke and Eero Miettinen have been appointed Professors of Practice. All the professorships belong to the Department of Design.

Saara Cantell's public defence 6.5.2011

30.05.2011 Saara Cantell's doctoral dissertation Timantiksi tiivistetty - kerronnalliset strategiat fiktiivisessä lyhytelokuvassa (Crystallized to Diamonds will be published in English later) was examined at the Aalto Unviersity School of Art and Design on Fri 6th of May 2011. Doctor of Philosophy, Docent Kimmo Laine from the University of Oulu acted as the opponent, custos was Prof. Laura Gröndahl from the department of Motion Picture, Television and Production Design.

A Cavalcade of Colours and Interesting Forms at the Spring Fashion Show

Aalto University main campus to be located in Otaniemi

17.06.2011 The Aalto University Board has decided that the main campus of Aalto University will be located in Otaniemi, Espoo. Upon a decision made by the Board as well Aalto University School of Art and Design and the Department of Architecture will form a new school from the beginning of 2012.

23.06.2011 A total of 2 818 hopefuls interested in pursuing studies in the field of applied art applied for the Aalto University School of Art and Design this year. Out of the total number of applicants, 11.6 per cent were accepted for MA or BA programmes in the field of applied art.

Art came to Otaniemi

05.07.2011 "The Hall of Arts" (Taiteiden talo) started its operations at the end of the spring in Lämpömiehenkuja, Otaniemi. The hall is located in a building which is designed by Alvar Aalto and which has been previously housed the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

Name ideas sought for a new school at Aalto University

05.09.2011 The School of Art and Design and the Department of Architecture will merge to form a new school for Aalto University. Suggest a name for the new school and take part in the quest for name ideas!

Winners chosen in international Marimekko Design Competition

14.09.2011 The winners have been chosen in the international design competition in honour of Marimekko’s 60th anniversary, organised jointly by Marimekko and the Aalto University School of Art and Design. The competition, which started in March, challenged students at the world’s leading design schools to engage on the theme “Why not together?”

Joi Ito visits Aalto University School of Art and Design’s Media Lab

16.09.2011 The newly appointed director of the world-renowned MIT Media Lab, Joi Ito, paid a flying visit to Aalto University School of Art and Design's Media Lab on Wednesday 14th September. Joi Ito has been a leading light in the movement for openness and de-restrictions in intellectual property. He was recently listed by Businessweek as ‘one of the 25 most influential people on the web’. Amongst his many ongoing responsibilities he is chairman of the Creative Commons organization.

Shanghai honorary award to Professor Yrjö Sotamaa

20.09.2011 The City of Shanghai has conferred Professor emeritus Yrjö Sotamaa the Magnolia Silver Award of 2011, together with 46 other foreign citizens.

Cumulus Helsinki 2012: Call for papers opened

30.09.2011 Aalto University School of Art and Design will host the Cumulus conference in May 2012. The conference, titled Northern World Mandate – Towards Open and Participative Cities, now invites proposals for papers.

Wonderwater Tian Hai - How much water do you eat?

03.10.2011 Wonderwater at Tian Hai is a pop-up event taking place in a traditional Chinese restaurant Tian Hai (‘heaven and sea’), where visitors are invited to explore the impact of what we eat on local and global water consumption. wonderwater at Tian Hai is Aalto University´s prelude to wonderwater at the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012. The project is curated by Jane Withers and Kari Korkman. The event takes place during Beijing Design Week (24 September–2 October 2011).

Department of Design in Co-Core Seoul

07.10.2011 The Co-Core International Art & Design Critiques is held this week in Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea. Aalto University´s Department of Design is partaking in the event with faculty and students. The idea of Co-Core is to expose cross-disciplinary and cross-culturally student work in process for a rich dialogue.
