Jussi Kantonen's 'Moduuli' wins School of Arts, Design and Architecture website design competition

07.11.2013

A competition was held to find a new concept for the School of Arts, Design and Architecture website.

The competition jury selected graphic design master's student Jussi Kantonen's work, entitled Moduuli, as the winning entry, considering it to be a clear and well thought-out ensemble.

Second prize was awarded to an entry entitled SADA. It came from architect Pedro Precedo. His work received special recognition for giving a prominent place to the departments of the school. In addition, the design featured an interesting visual navigation element.

There were a total of six designs entered into the competition, of which Moduuli was judged to be the most developable option. Moduuli includes a good foundation for presenting artistic activity, both visually and functionally. It was also the only entry to consider all of the different terminal devices on which the website will be viewed.

Entrants were encouraged to make their designs reflect the distinct personality of ARTS and present content in an interesting way. Designs also had to comply with Aalto University's visual guidelines and offer a user experience that is consistent with the university's other websites. Other assessment criteria included usability and updateability for items on artistic activity.

The aim is to use the winning entry’s concept when presenting artistic activities outside the scope of the School of Arts, Design and Architecture website, for example, on the Aalto University website and on the websites of departments within the school. The concept must therefore have a functioning solution for the creation of visual content.

In addition to awarding the prizes, the jury decided to organise a workshop at which the winning entrant could present their design and where the design could be further developed. The event, which will feature the involvement of the departmental members of the jury, will be held in November or December.

Those involved in the assessment of the entries were Professor of New Media Design and Learning Environments Teemu Leinonen from the Department of Media, Professor of Fashion Design Pirjo Hirvonen from the Department of Design, Communications Director Hanna Maula, Communications Manager Anne Tapanainen, and Communications Manager and competition secretary Eveliina Olsson. In addition, Professor of Graphic Design Marjatta Itkonen from the Department of Media submitted her own designs to the competition.
