Reorganisation of School of Arts, Design and Architecture activity in Pori

26.09.2013

Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture is in discussions on possible reorganisation of its functions in the University Consortium of Pori. As a result of the Aalto University degree reform, the Master’s Degree Programmes in Visual Culture and Creative Business Management (CBM), which have a combined total of 78 students, will be suspended in their current forms in autumn 2014.

The courses of all those students who have started studying in Pori will be safeguarded.

The master's degree programmes have been well-designed and successful in many ways, but cannot be seen as internationally competitive programmes of the future in their current forms. Aalto University offers its students excellent opportunities in multi-disciplinary studies, but these are not available to the same extent in Pori.

Aalto University intends to maintain its strong regional role in the University Consortium of Pori and in the Pori region. The university is in discussions with the University Consortium of Pori and the City of Pori concerning a new operational model for project-based teaching in Pori. The model would offer both Aalto and regional players the opportunity to run broader multi-disciplinary teaching and research activity in Pori and Satakunta than ever before. Decisions will be made during this autumn, and operations will begin in the beginning of 2015.

The reorganisation is not expected to result in the need for any staff reduction, but the change may require some staff members to relocate for work. Aalto University has started co-operation negotiations regarding the reorganisation. The negotiations affect nine employees.

The Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture and its precursor have been running activities in the University Consortium of Pori since 2002.
