Theatre goes movies brings movies to the theatre
14.08.2013
On 21 August, the Helsinki Triptych, a collection of three movies produced as a collaboration between three famous theatres, Ryhmäteatteri, KOM-teatteri and Viirus, will premiere as part of the annual Helsinki Festival.
The three-movie collection was directed by Jarmo Lampela, Head of the Department of Film, Television and Scenography at Aalto University. This unique movie-making collaboration with theatres is part of the Theatre goes movies project, which creates new forms of cooperation between filmmakers and theatre artists.
'Our aim was to explore new approaches that would enable filmmakers and theatre artists to produce movies as part of a theatre’s programming. We also studied the possibility of a theatre ensemble working as a movie’s screenwriters. The stories of the triptych’s independent but linked movies were formed as a collective group effort,’ Mr Lampela explained
The Helsinki Triptych consists of KOM-teatteri’s Miten meistä tuli ystäviä, Ryhmäteatteri's Keikka and Viirus’ Kilimanjaro. Each of the movies is a standalone story, but they contain overlaps where the stories link, meaning the audience can follow some of the characters in multiple stories.
The project is part of Jarmo Lampela’s artistic work as Professor at the Department of Film, Television and Scenography.
‘While making a movie, our aim is to produce an open source code that anyone can utilise and further develop. Our purpose was also to find out whether this production model could function as a base for regional movies in Finland’, Mr Lampela says.
Plans are also in the works to continue the project.
‘There are already numerous theatres that have expressed an interest in participating in a similar project. Additionally, it is our aim to create a similar production in two other Nordic countries in cooperation with the University of Tampere Centre for Practise as Research in Theatre’, Mr Lampela tells.
Around 30 people from the KOM-teatteri, Ryhmäteatteri and Viirus theatres participated in the project, as did students and staff from Aalto University. All in all, including visitors and assistants, approximately 150 people took part in the project.
