Aalto a visible participant at Helsinki Design Week

Aalto University students, researchers and alumni are participating in Helsinki Design Week 6–16 September 2012 in the form of numerous exhibitions and events. The exhibitions are focused on the design of better living environments and industrial art design, displaying the projects of future artists and designers. The programme for Open House Helsinki includes walking tours at the Töölö and Otaniemi campuses. The Pavilion will remain open for the duration of Helsinki Design Week.

Who Cares? Design Cares exhibition

12–16 September, Cable Factory, Tallberginkatu 1
Open Thurs–Fri 11 am – 7 pm, Sat–Sun 11 am – 5 pm, opening on Wed 12 September at 7 pm

The Who Cares? Design Cares exhibition is a collaboration between three universities that explores improvement of the quality of life through people-based healthcare. The project focused on such key points as care of stress, childhood obesity, smoke-free living environments and personal wellbeing.

The participating universities were Aalto University, the Design Academy Eindhoven and the Technical University of Eindhoven. The exhibition is part of the 365 Wellbeing project entity, which is part of the Aalto University Living+ programme for the World Design Capital year. Further information www.design-cares.com

MoA'12 Road Show exhibition

6–16 September, Kiseleff House, Aleksanterinkatu 28
Open Mon–Fri 10 am –7 pm, Sat 10 am –5 pm, Sun 12 noon – 5 pm, opening on Thurs 6 September 5 pm – 7 pm

The MoA'12 Road Show is a cross-section of the final works by master's degree students, who graduated from Aalto University this past spring. The exhibition includes ten young designers, engineers and economists. They first showed their work at the MoA'12 event in Jätkäsaari, Helsinki this past May, along with nearly one hundred other future doers. The works now on show are key works such as service model concepts, photographic art and furniture design. Further information moa.aalto.fi

LOLO&RORO jubilee exhibition

31 August – 30 September, Rantamakasiini L3, Tyynenmerenkatu 6, Jätkäsaari
Open Mon–Fri 2 pm – 6 pm, Sat–Sun 12 noon – 6 pm

Young designers have produced this jubilee exhibition to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the Aalto University Art and Design degree programme. The coastal warehouse at Jätkäsääri, in Helsinki, is a stage for art and design, and offers a diverse exhibition on industrial art design and its makers. Further information lolororo.com

MARIKAUPUNKI – Developing the Helsinki urban milieu

6–15 September, Marikiska, Uudenmaankatu 13
Open Mon–Fri 10 am – 6 pm, Sat 10 am – 3 pm

Aalto University students of urban design focused on those areas of Helsinki that are developing and in a state of change. The students' task was to envision future trends using Marimekko's values as their guiding principles. The results are now on show at Marikiska.

Co-Create with LEGO: Open the Tower

12–16 September, Cable Factory, Merikaapelihalli
Open Thurs–Fri 11 am– 7 pm, Saturday–Sunday 11 am – 5 pm, opening on Wed 12 September at 3 pm

Architectural studio KRADS, the Why Factory think-tank and LEGO are shipping 200 000 Lego blocks to the Cable Factory. An architectonic workshop organised in collaboration with Aalto University and Iceland Design Centre will transform Merikaapelihalli into a playful construction site.

See the campuses on the Open House Helsinki tours

On Friday 14 September, a walking tour will focus on the architecture of the School of Business in Töölö. On Saturday 15 September and Sunday 16 September the tours, narrated in English, will take place on the Otaniemi campus in Espoo with Alvar Aalto as their theme. The Pavilion is open for its final weeks

Open Tues–Sun 11 am – 9 pm

The Pavilion, designed by the Aalto University Wood Studio, has been an interesting meeting point in summertime Helsinki and an important part of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 year.
