Ceremonial Conferment of Master’s and Doctoral Degrees at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture on 11 January 2013

24.08.2012

Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture will hold its fourth Formal Conferment Ceremony for Master’s and Doctoral degrees on Friday 11 January 2013.

The School of Arts, Design and Architecture granted its 100th doctoral degree in the field of art and design on 24 August. This is an amazing achievement when considering that the school began with two Doctors of Arts at its first formal conferment ceremony in 1993. It also demonstrates the results of long-term development work. Honorary doctorates have been granted to 23 people so far, and the names of the Honorary Doctors for 2013 will be announced in October.

– The 100th doctorate at our School illustrates the depth and comprehensiveness of our research. This is something that we could only dream about when the first doctorate was completed back in 1991. Research is an integral part of all degree programmes at our School, says the Conferrer of Degrees, Professor Pekka Korvenmaa, who is the vice dean responsible for research.

The Ceremonial Conferment of Degrees at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture combines academic tradition with that of the school. At the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, the celebration will be held in the middle of winter on the anniversary of the school. After the Act of Conferment at other universities, the newly conferred masters and doctors proceed to a church ceremony, but at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture the celebratory procession will pass through a staged Media Centre Lume.

– The Ceremonial Conferment of Degrees is a wonderful, centuries-old rite of transition to the academic community. It is symbolised by freedom, science and, at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, art and creativity – what could be a better reason to celebrate? states Project Coordinator Ada Schwanck.

The Ceremonial Conferment is a traditional academic celebration at which academic insignia are granted to masters, doctors and honorary doctors. The Conferment Ceremony is organised every six years, and was last held in January 2007 when the School was still known as the University of Art and Design Helsinki.Promootio 2013
