Helena Hyvönen appointed as Dean of Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture

The Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture will begin to operate on 1 January 2012 as the current Aalto University School of Art and Design and the Department of Architecture at the Aalto University School of Engineering will combine forces.
Hyvönen has worked as a professor of textile art at the School of Art and Design since 1998. She was appointed head of the Department of Fashion and Textile Art in 1999, and in 2003, she became head of the School of Design. Hyvönen was appointed Rector of the School of Art and Design on 1 April 2008. In the beginning of 2010, she started as Dean of the Aalto University School of Art and Design. In November 2011, Hyvönen was appointed to the tenure track position of full professor at Aalto University.
Helena Hyvönen has held international positions in the areas of industry, trade, organisations, and university collaboration. She has also been actively involved in developing operational and educational opportunities in the areas of design and textile design at various bodies.
Hyvönen graduated from the School of Art and Design in 1974. After that, she worked as a designer in the Finnish textile industry and later served in managerial posts as head designer and director of collections. In her artistic activity, she specializes in industrial textile design. Industrial textiles and unique art textiles designed by Hyvönen are on display in numerous public spaces.
The duty of a dean at Aalto University is to direct school activities in accordance with the strategy of the university and to take part in the long-term development of Aalto University as a member of the Management Team.
