The New School at Aalto University brings together art and architecture
20.06.2011
Aalto University School of Art and Design and the Department of Architecture at the School of Engineering will form a new School on 1 January 2012.
The Board of Aalto University has decided to approve the proposal submitted by the New School project led by Dean Helena Hyvönen. The combination of architecture, landscape architecture, art and design in the same School supports the strategic goals of Aalto University and promotes its profiling as an international developer of a human-oriented living environment.
- The new school is a wonderful opportunity for Aalto University to strengthen its profile and international interest, states Dean Helena Hyvönen of Aalto University School of Art and Design. Combining teaching and research related to the humanistic-cultural tradition and the environment in the same school is also important for society. At the same time, it will help to strengthen the status of architecture, art, media and design in the Finnish culture and economy and society at large, outlines Helena Hyvönen.
- The connection between architecture, civil and structural engineering, urban and regional planning and surveying will become even closer, emphasises Professor Juha Paavola, Director of the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering. For example, this will be visible in joint courses and multidisciplinary student projects.
- Master of Science in Architecture will remain an engineering degree. Science and technology expertise will continue to be an essential part of educating architects, but in the future engineering sciences will also benefit from the link to creative sectors, states Professor Antti-Matti Siikala, Director of the Department of Architecture.
