Five entries were shortlisted for the final stage of this year's competition. The competition's May Day theme invited entrants to come up with imaginative designs for objects and structures associated with summer day trips and picnics. The designers were asked to evoke functionality, aesthetic beauty, and fun times with friends and family in their designs.

Jointly organised by the Messukeskus Expo and Convention Centre and Aalto University, the design competition is now in its thirteenth year. This year's head judge was the French architect, Emmanuelle Moureaux.

The judging panel paid particular attention to the artistic, architectural, and design quality of the entries, their functionality and structural elements, and their overall durability and coherence.

Emanuelle Moureaux considered Laura Tourila's entry, Pilvi, which was made from tens of white plastic bags, to be reminiscent of clouds moving through the sky. With its weightless and poetic structure, light filters through Pilvi's air-filled balloons onto the floorspace below.

At the heart of Johanna Brummer and Heini-Emilia Saari's Viivy lies the interplay between light and shade. The design is a picnic blanket that draws energy from the sunlight capturing the shadows of the picnic party and prolonging the evening by emitting a beautiful glow after sunset.

A total of 66 entries were submitted for this year's Habitare design competition. In addition to Pilvi and Viivy, the final was contested by the eventual winner, Havina (Samuli Helavuo, Lahti Institute of Design and Fine Arts), and two other pieces from Aalto University's School of Arts, Design and Architecture (Keinu by Krista Meskanen, Satu Niemi and Annimaija Tarkkanen and Paletti by Saara Inkeri Heikkilä).

The Habitare design competition has a new theme and chief judge every year. In recent years, the themes have been Dreamspace (2013/winner Elina Ulvio),A Private Space (2012/winner Leo Lindroos), Outhouse (2011/winner Yoshimasa Yamada), Recycled Seat (2010/winners Arttu Kuisma and Janne Melajoki) and Sauna (2009/winners Ville Hara and Anu Puustinen). Previous head judges include Boris Berlin, Mikko Heikkinen, Alfredo Häberli, Sami Rintala, and Juha Leiviskä.

Finland needs the best talent to succeed http://old.elo.aalto.fi/en/current/news_archive/2014-09-02/ Aalto University’s President, Tuula Teeri, emphasised the importance of global competitiveness and know-how based on Finnish strengths during her address at the official opening of the university’s new academic year.

“If the best you can do is copy others, you will always be playing catch-up, following and not leading. World-class research teams play a critical role in generating genuinely new knowledge and training new graduates. Innovations are created by those who understand the problems and challenges facing society and the potential of their expertise to solve these problems,” said Teeri at the official opening held on the university’s Arabia campus on 2 September.

In today’s globally competitive world, the success of universities needs to be assessed globally, she continued.

“If we want to succeed as a nation, we need excellent researchers, the best anywhere in fact. It is of primary importance that the universities that Finland wants to maintain are international leaders in their areas of strength. It is also essential that university professors have good links to the business world and the rest of society. In this respect, Finland and Aalto University are already world-leading.”

Tuula Teeri also underlined the importance of a long-term perspective in making investments in the university sector.

“A lack of consistent direction in university funding will always have a negative effect. Developing cutting-edge expertise is expensive, but trying to live without it is even more expensive.”

Universities as drivers of development

The Chairperson of the Aalto Student Union Board, Lauri Lehtoruusu, also highlighted the importance of successful universities in today’s internationally competitive world.

“Finland’s strength and future will be based on freedom and responsibility, and these are the qualities that will foster our future experts and their individuality and ability to survive in global competition and generate added value for society during their studies and after. The university of the future must not be a factory for degrees or publications, but a driver for developing society and one that serves society at the same time.”

Matti Vanhanen, the Managing Director of the Finnish Family Firms Association, addressed the event on behalf of the business community. As Prime Minister, he played a central role in the creation of Aalto University and recalled those times:

“The additional funding that my government allocated as capital and for operational expenses was not granted as automatic extra funding for the university sector. The sector only received this funding because of the university reform process then under way, and a major part of this additional funding was provided because we believed in the concept behind Aalto University. This money was not taken away from other universities, it was simply extra money.”

In the Aalto Talk, Assistant Professor, Micro and Nanoelectronics Hele Savin outlined some of the new areas of international research under way in her field of solar energy and the opportunities that collaboration with the corporate world can offer research work. The Aalto Act of the Year Award was also presented at the event, to Professor, Textile Art and Design Pirjo Kääriäinen of the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, and Professor, Wood Chemistry Tapani Vuorinen of the School of Chemical Technology, in recognition of their cross-disciplinary work on the CHEMARTS project – a project that has developed a number of new concepts for the bioeconomy of the future by combining design, branding, and the sciences of natural materials.

Aalto University welcomes 1661 new students http://old.elo.aalto.fi/en/current/news_archive/2014-07-02/ 172 new students will be studying in the School of Arts, Design and Architecture.

A total of 1661 students were selected by Aalto University in the spring 2014 round of admissions. Of these new students, 338 will be studying in the School of Engineering, 413 the School of Business (Helsinki or Mikkeli units), 156 the School of Chemical Technology, 294 the School of Sciences, 288 the School of Electrical Engineering, and 172 the School of Arts, Design and Architecture.

The total number of applications to all Aalto units received this spring was 10 588, of which 15,7 % were admitted. In addition, 926 applicants were accepted onto Master’s programmes. A total of 3,089 candidates applied for Master’s programmes at Aalto University.

The names of successful Aalto University candidates are announced on 19 June 2014 (for Arts students) and on 2 July 2014 (Business and Technology students). The names of candidates accepted onto Master's degree programmes were announced on 3 March 2014.

Stiff competition for places at Aalto University's technology-oriented schools

A total of 1 100 new students were successful in the joint application process for Master of Sciences in Technology and Architecture students in 2014. These students will take up their degree places in Aalto University's technology-oriented schools (Schools of Engineering, Chemical Technology, Sciences, Electrical Engineering, and the School of Arts, Design and Architecture). All in all, a total of 3,953 candidates made it through the application process for bachelor-level degree programmes in the fields of sciences and technology studies. The number of applicants fell by 8.6% from 2013. Applications from female candidates represent 26,2 % of all successful applications.

The points totals required in the national entrance exams for technology-oriented degrees were raised this year, with the highest required for Industrial Engineering and Management, Applied Physics, Mathematics, Bioinformatics, and Architecture. The area receiving the most applications was Computer Science and Engineering.

The School of Business remains a popular choice – 333 candidates were selected from a total of 3,138 applications

3018 first-choice applications were received for bachelor-level degrees offered at Aalto University's School of Business. For their part, a total of 3,138 applicants sought study places on the School's bachelor-level programmes taught at the University's Töölö campus.  10,6 % of applicants were successful (9,2 % year 2013).  In comparison to 2013, there was a slight rise in the number of applications  (3,011 applications; 277 offered a study place). This can be explained in terms of the expected level of annual variation.  The increase in the ratio of places offered and applications received can be explained by the increase in the number of places (40) made available for first-year students of business.

A total of 333 new students were accepted onto bachelor-level programmes at the Helsinki unit of Aalto University's School of Business in 2014. These students will study for Bachelor's (B.Sc. Econ) and Master's (M.Sc. Econ) degrees in business and economics.  For the second time, study places were offered for those who had been successful in the national Talousguru ("Economics Guru") competition. All three of the successful entrants seized the opportunity, and one of them will start their studies this year.

In the Master’s level admissions earlier this spring, 164 applicants were admitted to the School of Business to study for a Master of Science (Economics and Business) degree. The total number of applicants was 296.

There were 913 applicants for the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in International Business offered at the university's Mikkeli unit, of which 80 were offered a place

A total of 80 new students were admitted onto the Bachelor's Degree Programme in International Business (BBA) taught at the university's Mikkeli campus. The language of instruction on the degree is English. The Mikkeli unit received 913 applications from 72 different countries. The unit has its own application process.

Places were offered to 7.3% of applicants in the field of Art and Design

A total of 1,577 hopefuls applied for studies in the field of Art and Design offered by Aalto University's School of Art, Design and Architecture this year. Of the 2,610 applicants who completed their university application form, 1,577 went on to return the pre-admission assignment. This was the first year that the new target programmes were open for applications. Of the applicants, 115 students, or 7.3%, were admitted to study for a Bachelor of Arts degree. Applications from female candidates represent 71.3% of all successful applications.  Art Education, Graphic Design, and Interior Architecture were the most popular target programmes among the applicants. There was a 13.3% fall in the number of applications compared to 2013, when a total of 1,819 applications were received.

In the Master’s level admissions earlier this spring, 197 applicants were admitted to the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. The total number of applicants was 935.

Lively discussion on degree reform with students and stakeholders http://old.elo.aalto.fi/en/current/news_archive/2013-12-20-002/ The Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture organised a stakeholder event where, among other things, the focal points of the new degrees and strategic partners in education were raised in the discussion.

The TOKYO Association and Guild of Architects also organised an event to discuss the degree reform. At the event, students wondered in particular how the new degrees would be reflected in their everyday lives.

At the stakeholder event, Vice Dean Ossi Naukkarinen, responsible for education, presented the key points of the degree reform. Representatives from the departments described their educational offerings and where the reform was targeted. The main changes include increased student options and transfer to a joint bachelor's programme with partly revised majors.

The stakeholder groups were interested in whether the focal points of the degrees would change. In the background to this debate lie the fresh degree reforms at the schools of technology and the concern that students will not have enough time to explore their majors enough during their bachelor's studies.

According to Ossi Naukkarinen the change in the School of Arts, Design and Architecture is not as great as in schools of technology.

‘Specialisation already takes place to a degree at the bachelor's stage, but not too much. Good elements from the previous degree programmes have been put into the new degrees, but opportunities for building wide ranging and personalised study paths are being included better than before. Our goal is to improve the communication between the different subjects.’

Representatives of the stakeholder groups raised the issue of the increase in master's level education.

From the view of the School of Arts, Design and Architecture it is a question of our school's development in line with the strategy of the university. Bachelor's level education is still being offered in those areas where we have no equivalent strategic partnerships in Finland, such as in the photographic arts. The School of Arts, Design and Architecture is already working in collaboration with both universities of applied sciences and other universities.

‘We have built platforms for collaboration, for example, in Pori and Vaasa. Cooperation can also mean academic and applied research according to the orientation of the education provider. We want to continue to discuss cooperation,’ says Helena Hyvönen.

The transition to the new degrees becomes the main subject of discussion at the TOKYO and Guild of Architects event

The new degrees will enter into force on 1 August 2014, and at the same time the current programmes will expire. During the transitional period students have the right to move to the new programme or continue in the current programme. During the event, the students wanted to know how the transition to the new degree courses would work in practice. A transitional phase is planned for students in personal study plan sessions, where they are advised to select a reasonable alternative for completing their degrees from an academic perspective. Course substitutions will be prepared in the spring. The goal is to make the process as smooth as possible from the students' point of view.

The event also discussed the art studies being prepared for general art studies, which will be carried out in art periods. Until now, art studies have consisted of relatively separate courses. Now, these will become closer to one another, so that art and theory support each other.

With the reform, the importance of personal guidance is central to planning the student's transition.

Graduation Ceremony attracted a large audience at Sampo Hall http://old.elo.aalto.fi/en/current/news_archive/2013-05-24-002/ Recent graduates received certificates of their Master and Bachelor of Arts (Art and Design), Bachelor of Science (Technology) and Master of Science (Architecture) degrees at the spring Graduation Ceremony of the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. The Sampo Hall at the Media Centre Lume was crowded with the friends and family members of new graduates.

The ceremony was opened by Antti Ahlava, Head of the Department of Architecture, who presented recent developments in his department. The Department of Architecture is involved in several international construction and design projects, and the students have achieved success in competitions both at home and abroad.

In her speech, the Dean discussed new projects launched in 2012. In many ways, the areas of expertise represented in the School of Arts, Design and Architecture are at the heart of development in the creative sectors.

'A good example of the impact of our activities from last year was World Design Capital Helsinki 2012, for which our school produced more than 30 projects. I’m sure that everyone noticed the pavilion that was built on an empty lot between the Design Museum and the Museum of Finnish Architecture. It became one of the symbols of the entire year. Students and staff from the Department of Architecture’s Wood Studio were responsible for designing and implementing the pavilion,' explained Dean Helena Hyvönen.

In her speech, the Dean also addressed a useful concept that may have been less visible to the general public: the 365 Wellbeing project, which involved using design expertise to create a link between social and health service production and improved quality.

'These two projects demonstrate the broad-ranging nature of our school. The pavilion challenged the use of urban space in a new way by creating a genuine and inspiring meeting place for city residents. At the same time, the pavilion tested new civil and structural engineering solutions as part of possibilities for wood construction,' said Helena Hyvönen.

'The Wellbeing project lays the foundation for using service design for new ways of producing well-being services. Both of the projects that I have highlighted here show how our school’s disciplines participate in social development and in finding solutions to current issues,' Dean Hyvönen continued.

Awards for theses

Grants were awarded to outstanding students. Vice Dean Ossi Naukkarinen presented grants awarded by the departments to Timo Huhtala and Päivi Kettunen from the Department of Film, Television and Scenography; Simon Örnberg, Ai Ono and Satu Maaranen from the Department of Design; and Sarun Pinyarati from the Department of Media.

Grants were also awarded to last year’s graduates Satu Maaranen and Antti Pesonen for their international achievements. The winning collection by Satu Maaranen, Master of Arts (Art and Design), who won the Grand Prix at the French Hyères Fashion Festival in April, has been widely praised in different contexts. A film directed by Antti Pesonen, entitled Korsoteoria, has gained success ever since its initial screening.

The Metex Foundation Award was granted to a multidisciplinary team of three recent graduates, each of whom has considered the development of passenger ships and cruise services from the perspective of their respective fields of research. The graduates Oliver Parmasto (School of Engineering), Yali Wu (School of Business) and Vesa Ylirisku (School of Arts, Design and Architecture) were praised by Jussi Neuvo, a representative of the foundation, for theirmultidisciplinary and holistic approach to real-life challenges.

For the second time in history, the Graduation Ceremony also included a message from the alumni. This was conveyed by Art Director Jaakko Veijola. Jaakko Veijola has worked in the top advertising agencies in Finland and produced marketing design and branding for many Finnish companies. In addition, Veijola has created works testing the boundaries of art and design that have been displayed in Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, for example.

In addition, the student organisation TOKYO presented the award for Teacher of the Year. The award was granted to Marco Rodriguez, who works as part of the three-person design agency Poiat. At the end of the ceremony, the audience enjoyed the performance The Masters of Life by the group Tärähtäneet ämmät, or Katriina Haikala and Vilma Metteri.

Creating packaging experiences http://old.elo.aalto.fi/en/current/news_archive/2012-05-22/ A product’s packaging is not merely a protective shell it travels home from the store in. Packaging may be fun and beautiful and does not need to be taken seriously.

"Packaging is a product's user interface, a brand builder, a communication tool and part of the experience associated with the product," states Markus Joutsela a researcher at the Aalto University Department of Media as well as developer and head teacher of the PACK-AGE packaging design course.

On 16 May new and even surprising solutions created by course participants were presented to the attendees at PACK-AGE's final gala. Students in Team Nokia came up with the creative idea of using the mouldable plywood Grada, launched by UPM, as a multifunctional and sustainable packaging material for Nokia mobile phones. Inspired by the Lumia Smartphone name (lumi is Finnish for snow) pretty the students added snowflakes to the design of some packages.

Three different collectable plywood packaging concepts were produced. The first concept is a play on the idea that packaging could offer its owner something fun to do as well as added value. The concept returns to the roots of photography via packaging; a pinhole camera in the package offers something new and interesting alongside mobile phone cameras. The package includes the liquids and papers needed for producing a traditional paper photograph. The mobile phone's infrared can act as a darkroom light. The idea is to take a step back in time to a time when photography required more understanding than snapping photos with today's mobiles phones does.

Team Nokia's second concept was to utilise the plywood material as an aesthetic object. The phone is locked in place between two opposite facing semicircles in a way that ensures it will remain unharmed in all positions, and all mobile related equipment is hidden behind the phone. The package changes into different objects by changing its position. For example, if it is placed diagonally it can function as an alarm clock with the mobile as the screen.

The team's last and perhaps most practical concept was a plywood charging stand for mobiles. Wireless electricity has been laminated into the plywood, ensuring that the product can be charged without use of a wire. The QR code includes the mobile telephone's instruction manual, meaning there is no need for a printed manual.

Packaging makes it possible to eat while you are walking

Atria asked course participants for a packaging solution for its Food-on-the-go products. These types of products are suited for busy individuals as well as for those who have no interest in preparing their own meals. The packaging solution should be handy and user-based, so that it is possible to eat the product on the go, for example, while walking. Team Atria came up with several clever packaging containers such as the Lapfood concept, designed to balance easily on one's lap or in one's hand, and the Break-it 'n´ Shake-it concept, designed so that the user can choose when to mix meat and salad with one another by pressing the top.

However, a concept named Muki (cup) was selected for the prototype phase. It is a cardboard cup made from Billerud’s FiberForm in which the core ingredient of the salad, such as chicken, fish or tofu and its dressing are in a cylinder at the centre of the cup. When the user is ready to eat the salad, they can remove the top and pull the cylinder up. The meaty core and dressing will then spread evenly over the salad. The FiberForm material used in the cups is easier to mould than normal. This makes it possible to press designs into the surface of the material. The texture of the material feels natural and appealing, and the surface pattern improves grip. The salad cup is suited for all standard-sized cup holders in cars, cinemas, airplanes, etc.

Team Kannisto + Anton&Anton designed ecological packaging solutions for bread sold at Anton&Anton, shop located in Kruununhaka, Helsinki. The designed packaging also acts as a media that will bring customers added value in their everyday lives.  The team presented two different bread packaging concepts. In the first concept the paper bag acts as a consumer guide with fun information graphics on the life cycle of fresh bread.

Joutsela says that companies have reacted very positively to the results of the course. Inter-disciplinary cooperation between teachers has also run smoothly, and the learning results have been substantial. Therefore the course piloted at the Aalto University Media Factory can be deemed a success and will be held again next year.

"The new school is a wonderful opportunity for Aalto University to strengthen its profile and international interest," states Dean Helena Hyvönen.
