The aim of the seminar is to present various perspective on public art: making art in metropols, a collector’s talk on how art intertwines with business, critical comments on the state of public art and also the latest news on how art is used as a part of the Otaniemi campus development.
'Aalto University is one of the few organisations having a strategy on public art and seeing the that public art and the University strategy intertwine. Public art has been on the agenda of the Finnish government for some time now, and there are already some good examples in Finland, too. Art affects us more than we realise. It is important we can enjoy art in our everyday environment', says Art Coordinator Outi Turpeinen from Aalto University.
The keynote speaker will be American artist Janet Echelman, who has constructed public artworks in metropolitan cities around the world. 'How can we enhance public spaces in cities so that they engage individuals and community? What can encourage us to slow down and take a moment of pause in our busy lives?', asks Echelman. She has developed platforms that enable members of the public to interact with her artwork. The result is a communal urban experience that is simultaneously virtual and physical.
Other seminar speakers include top experts from both Aalto University and Arts Promotion Centre Finland: Vice President Anna Valtonen, Professors Pekka Mattila and Ossi Naukkarinen, Special Adviser Henri Terho, Artists Otto Karvonen and Hanna Vihriälä and Art Coordinator Outi Turpeinen.
The seminar is organised by Aalto University together with Arts Promotion Centre Finland and will be held in English.
