Aalto Studios aims to be the media center of the future. It goes live in 2020 at the heart of the Otaniemi campus. But how to make sure it’s not just another building? Can it be turned into a space where people like to hang out, play video games, have barbecues, shoot and watch movies regardless of having overalls or not?

“We truly want people to come and experience the facilities, and to see how they could benefit the resources. Most importantly, we invite everyone to come up with new ways of using the Aalto Studios. We want people to throw the wildest ideas what these awesome resources and facilities could be used for”, says Ari Kivimäki, who is responsible for the events and partnerships at the Aalto Studios.

The new media centre now under planning aims to bring together the players of the creative economy: designers, filmmakers, youtubers, game developers, performing artists, educators, angel investors, public-sector operators and many more. The Aalto Studios visions to be the Media Centre of the future, where teaching, research and product development can measure up to the rapidly evolving digital society. The premises facilitate film and TV, game and animation, VR/AR, product and user experience testing, sensor data-analysis, web and social media, digitalization of teaching and fast prototyping.

Aalto Studios is established in November 2016 on the foundation of the Media Centre Lume and Aalto Media Factory. Operations are currently run in temporary facilities in Aalto Otaniemi Campus and around the City of Helsinki. The new facility will be ready by the end of 2020, an opening being planned for the New Year of 2021.
