Customers of today have gravitated from rationality towards the realm of desire. From objective to subjective. The minimum expectation for products and services is functionality, while purchasing decisions are made emotionally, based on how they make us feel. The perfect balance of functional and emotional design builds intuitive solutions and sensory experiences, enables better customer connection and positively impacts sustainability. The key tools to explore and express functional and emotional design are colour, material, finish and form.

The Functional and Emotional Design exhibition presents works from Aalto University’s Functional Clothing & Materials and Colour & Material Design courses. The Master’s and bachelor’s students’ work is inspired by the user/customer, their values, needs and desires. The goal for the students was to create concepts and products that people want, as well as what they can’t quite yet imagine. The exhibition questions and explores the balance of functionality and emotion by sharing the design process of functional clothing and accessories as well as by displaying colour and material palettes that express the characters and values of Millennials and Generation Z. Each exhibition visitor will find answers from the story of inspiration, innovation and surprise.

Exhibition is open 12. - 16.9.2017
